Wedding Guest Outfits, Solved: What to Wear in 2026
Every wedding invitation triggers the same 48-hour spiral: excitement, then panic, then seventeen open tabs. Let’s close them. Here’s the wedding guest formula we use ourselves — whatever the venue, the season or the dress code says (or doesn’t say).
Decode the dress code first
“Formal” means a midi or maxi dress and proper heels. “Cocktail” gives you room to play — stronger colour, a knee-length silhouette, statement earrings. “Smart casual” (the trickiest) is best solved with an elevated co-ord or a slip dress with a tailored layer. And no dress code at all? Aim one notch above what you’d wear to a nice dinner — nobody has ever regretted being slightly too polished at a wedding.
The colour rules that still matter
White, ivory and anything photographing as white are still off-limits — that hasn’t changed. Otherwise, 2026 is generous: rich burgundy, butter yellow, dusty blue and soft prints all work. If the ceremony is outdoors, mid-tone colours survive sun and photos better than black, which can feel heavy before sunset.
Dress for the timeline, not just the ceremony
The best wedding guest outfit survives twelve hours: ceremony, dinner, dance floor. That means a silhouette you can sit in, a heel you can genuinely walk on grass in (block heels are your friend), and layers for when the temperature drops at ten. A wrap or structured blazer earns its place in the car.
The finishing five minutes
Once the dress is decided, resist over-accessorising. One statement — bold earrings or a standout bag — plus delicate gold layers is the sweet spot. Your future self, reviewing the photos in ten years, will thank you for restraint.
The one-purchase answer
If you have multiple weddings this season (our condolences to your calendar), buy once, style twice: a midi dress in a rich solid colour changes completely with different shoes, jewellery and hair. That’s the smartest money in occasionwear.
